The research group is constituted of 4 Research Team lead by classical archaeologists having not only a well-established and long-history research activity on different archaeological sites of Italy but also complementary skills reflecting the aim and structure of the project: material culture studies, history, archaeometry, residue analysis, bio-archaeology, archaeozoology, macrobotanical analysis and ICT technologies.

University of Catania

Daniele Malfitana (PI), Full professor of Archaeology at the University of Catania, Head of the School of Advanced study in Archaeology, classical archaeologist, will lead the project and the Research Unit 1 (University of Catania). He knows perfectly how to manage complex projects thanks to his experience gained by the management of several regional, national and European projects. His research interest concerns the production, distribution and consumption of Hellenistic and Roman pottery all around the Mediterranean and on their digitization. The main aim of the Research Unit of the PI is to invest (for one year) on a specialized figure of Researcher in order to support the PI in the processes of digitization and archiving of documentation, through the creation of a specific database on which will be involved

the RTD recruited; in the creation of both 2D and 3D digital objects; in the design and implementation of the GIS data analysis platform and in the webGIS portal for sharing and disseminating results. UNICT research team will specifically recruit for the project:1 RTD involved in the study of a large part of the topics connected to the management and dissemination of the data acquired.

Ca’ Foscari University of Venice

Daniela Cottica will lead the Research Unit 2 (Ca’ Foscari University of Venice). She is Associate Professor in Classical Archaeology, expert in Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique ceramics, interdisciplinary approaches to archaeological ceramics, archaeology of production and consumption (see attached CV). She is currently field and project director of excavations at the fluvial harbour of Aquileia, where she leads an international research team comprising scholars from University of Aix-Marseille, Toulouse, Pisa, Bologna and SISBA (Scuola Interateneo di Specializzazione in Beni Archeologici). She will be actively involved in the project for 5 months (of which 3 months have been exposed in budget entry A1). UNIVE research team will specifically recruit for the project: -1 postdoc researcher (12 months research contract exposed in budget entry A2 that will be extended up to 24 months using the budget entry B/overhead) involved in ceramic processing and analysis, data processing, statistical analysis, Monte Carlo simulation, network analysis. The Research Unit will support the PI in the processes of data digitization and archiving, data set implementation, data quantification, statistical analysis.

University of Genoa

Silvia Pallecchi will lead the Research Unit 3 (University of Genoa) dedicated to ceramic standardization and with a specific focus on fine and coarse ware pottery production. The Research Unit is made up of an associate professor in Archaeology, expert in the field of Roman pottery production and bio-archaeology and a full professor in Georesources and mineralogical-petrographic applications for the environment and cultural heritage, with particular expertise in the field of Archaeometry. The team will work closely with the researches of the Laboratorio di Archaeobiologia, Musei Civici di Como (Dr. Elisabetta Castiglioni, archaeobotanist-anthracologist; Dr. Mauro Rottoli, archaeobotanist-carpologist), who have a great deal of experience in the study of bioarchaeological remains.

Institute for Heritage Science of Italian National Research Council

Alessio Toscano Raffa, classical archaeologist and researcher at ISPC-CNR, will lead the project and the Research Unit 4 (Institute for Heritage Science of Italian National Research Council). He have a long experience in the reconstruction of the historic development of landscapes, between natural and human interaction, based on the results acquired by surveys, archaeological excavations and analysis of the material remains. He works and directed many archaeological expeditions in South Italy and Greece focused on the reconstruction of historic development of Hellenistic and Roman settlements (Finziade, Tauromenion, Villa romana di Patti Marina, Skotoussa).
